How Do You Get to Koyasan from Osaka, and Get Around the Temple Town?

Published 2026-10-04 · Sources checked 2026-10-04 · Treasure Hunting Co., Ltd.

This guide is for visitors who want to reach Koyasan, the temple town on top of Mount Koya in Wakayama, and get around it on foot or by bicycle. It covers the rail route from Osaka, the main driving routes, and what the temple and the lodging association say about getting around once you arrive.

We used the official English pages of Koyasan Shingon Sect Main Temple Kongobu-ji and of the Koyasan Shukubo Association, which is the temple lodging association. All pages were read on 2026-10-04. Timetables change, so check the railway's own timetable before you travel.

By train from Osaka

The lodging association says the Nankai Electric Railway runs between Osaka Namba Station and Koyasan Station. The association gives these figures:

The temple's own access page describes the same line from a different angle. It tells visitors to get off at Gokurakubashi Station on the Nankai Koya Line and transfer to the Koyasan Cable Car. The railway's station telephone is listed as a Japanese-language line, so use the online timetable if you do not speak Japanese.

From the airports and Shin-Osaka

The temple's page gives three starting points that all lead to the same Nankai Koya Line:

The temple does not give travel times for these legs, and neither do we.

By car

The lodging association describes the driving routes in road numbers. From Kawachi-nagano in Osaka, take Route 371 to Hashimoto. Then take Route 24 to Koyaguchi and Kudoyama. Finally, take Routes 370 and 480 up to Koyasan.

The association gives the time as about 2 hours from Osaka and about 5 hours from Nagoya. From Shirahama or Tanabe, it describes Routes 42, 311 and 371 to Ryujin, then the Koya-Ryujin Skyline to Koyasan, taking about 3 hours from Shirahama.

Keep in mind that the temple asks visitors not to take vehicles or bicycles into the designated holy areas and temple grounds. If you must, the temple says to ask the destination beforehand.

Getting around once you are there

The association recommends its rent-a-cycle service for sightseeing. It says 10 bicycles are available and reservations are taken by telephone between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. One bicycle costs 400 yen for up to one hour, plus 100 yen for every extra 30 minutes.

The association also explains the temple ticket system. Six sites charge their own entry fee: Kongobuji, the Reihokan Treasure Museum, Daishi Kyokai, the Daito pagoda, the Kondo hall and the Tokugawa Family Mausoleum. At any of its information centers you can buy a "Common Ticket for Visiting Temples" that works at all six for one fee.

The temple's own fee table lists a similar ticket for five sites at 2,500 yen for junior high school students and older. See our guide to temple etiquette and fees for the details. The two sources describe different tickets, so ask at the counter which one you are buying.

Where the temple town is

The lodging association says Koyasan lies on a small plain at the top of Mount Koya. The temple complex called Danjo Garan stands there. The inner sanctuary, Okuno-in, lies in a forest of large cedars.

Our guide to Okunoin, Danjo Garan and the World Heritage listing explains what you will see on the mountain.
